PROFILE / FILTERING AND FOCUSSING

With a customized combination of design, strategy and communication I help companies reposition themselves as regards corporate culture, filter out fields of expertise and focus on central design issues.

The spectrum of work processes ranges from developing the right strategy to designing and defining the corporate appearance and brand and, finally, market launch.

Profile

For these complex processes I rely on collaboration with an expert network comprising architects, product and web designers, graphic artists, PR professionals, copywriters, and photographers, with whom I have successfully worked for many years.

From this pool of experts, I assemble a team whose abilities best meet the project requirements, acting as the coordinator responsible for the overall output

BACKGROUND / CURIOUS ABOUT PEOPLE AND OBJECTS

In my work, it is important for me to build bridges between the fields of architecture, interior design, furniture and product design, specifically as this allows me to take a holistic approach. From a designer’s viewpoint, I relate the central themes of a particular job to corporate issues. This enables me to develop solutions that not only make design part of corporate culture, but likewise consider it as a prime business factor. I always view my consulting services as a personal challenge. This suits the open mindset I so cherish and fits my wide range of interests, my enthusiasm for objects, materials and cultural contexts, my curiosity about people and my understanding of your requirements and wishes.

  • Degree in Interior Design (Dipl.Ing FH), University of Applied Sciences Mainz, Germany
  • Master of Arts from the Department of Spatial and Furniture Design, University of Art and Design Helsinki, Finland
  • Scholarship holder of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)
  • 2002 to 2005 Project developer for urban planning at the building company Hartela Oy, Turku, Finland
  • 2005 to 2008 Member of Design Management at Stylepark AG, Frankfurt/Main, major involvement in setting up Materialworks and Stylepark Material; various consulting projects in the context of materials and design

INSPIRATION / THE FASCINATION FOR FINNISH CULTURE

When I relocated to Helsinki in the mid-1990s to continue my studies in the Finnish capital, Nokia and the dotcom boom were still in their infancy. My decision was therefore met with skepticism by many. Few showed any understanding, namely the experts on Finland who no doubt had those great Finnish designers Alvar Aalto and Kaj in mind.
My own enthusiasm for Finland was sparked by the furniture created by Yrjö Kukkapuro – its originality simply fascinated me and made me curious to find out more about the country and its people. Moreover, I wanted to experience life in a culture in which architecture and design are central to society, more so than anywhere else in the world.

Initially, Finland seemed to me to be a small country on Europe’s periphery; but later, inspired by the Web boom, rapidly a sense of excitement about the future spread through the country. Now Finland has positioned itself as a design Mecca of international reputation – a development crowned by Helsinki being nominated “World Design Capital 2012”.

Having lived in Finland for nearly seven years, I still feel very connected to the Northern countries. I have close ties to the Scandinavian design scene, regularly attend Scandinavian furniture trade fairs, and am a member of the German Alvar Aalto Society.

BUCHMESSE 2014

PHOTO BLOG / A DESIGNER’S VIEW OF THE WORLD

As a designer, hardly a day goes by without me getting excited about shapes, contexts, materials and details that tend to be concealed from general view. With my camera, I explore the hidden details of what is unspectacular and allegedly mundane.

I am particularly intrigued by textures, surfaces and geometrical shapes, surprising forms and arrangements, yet also by objects and places that only reveal their true beauty at second glance.

Photography for me is synonymous with structuring my visual impressions, concentrating on what is special in our daily lives. My pictures thus turn into an expression of creative experience and show my personal view of the world.

I have set up my photo blog “multiple mirrors” with a view to forging new associations by presenting images from a range of different fields and contexts, while also sharing with others my perception as a designer of what surrounds us.

INTERIOR LOOKBOOK

The Interior Lookbook is a very special expressive tool developed by Barbara Glasner and Franziska Holzmann, offering any number of possibilities for staging products and projects.

The focus of this kind of lookbook is on pictorial worlds custom developed for and with the client, complemented by expert texts, essays or corporate specials on related topics spotlighting interiors, furniture, textiles, colors and accessories. The Interior Lookbook thus purposely distances itself from the presentations to be found in conventional product catalogs.

As an external means of communication, such lookbooks are aimed principally at current end consumers and planners in the fields of interior design, architecture and furnishing as well as representing a credible statement directed at the opinion-shaping design community.
